A dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, and other officers allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi have been remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre, following their arraignment before a court in Delta State.

The officers were remanded on Monday, June 1, 2026, over the controversial killing of Ogidi in Effurun, an incident that sparked widespread public outrage after a video of the shooting circulated on social media.

The remand follows disciplinary actions earlier taken by the police.

In April, the inspector-general of police approved the dismissal and prosecution of Usman and other officers connected to the incident after an internal investigation reportedly found grounds for criminal proceedings.

Ogidi was allegedly shot dead on April 26, 2026, by Usman, who was attached to the Effurun Area Command at the time.

The shooting occurred despite the suspect being handcuffed and pleading for his life in a video that quickly went viral and drew condemnation from Nigerians and human rights advocates.

According to reports, Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

Police officers attached to the Effurun Area Command were reportedly deployed to arrest him following intelligence provided by members of the public.

However, Usman, who led the operation, acted contrary to established police procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Prior to the shooting, Ogidi was seen in the widely circulated video begging for mercy and offering to lead officers to a location in Sapele.

Unverified claims that later emerged suggested he possessed information relating to previous police operations in the Jesse and Sapele axis.

Legal observers note that the arraignment and remand of the dismissed officers represent the next phase of the judicial process following the conclusion of internal police disciplinary proceedings.

Under established procedures, officers accused of serious misconduct are often subjected to administrative investigations before criminal prosecution is initiated.

The court’s decision to remand the defendants is not a determination of guilt but a procedural step pending further proceedings and legal advice from the appropriate prosecuting authorities.

The case continues to attract significant public interest, with many Nigerians closely monitoring the prosecution as a test of police accountability and the justice system’s response to allegations of extrajudicial killings.
