Armed soldiers in gunboats reportedly launched a shocking assault on Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, early Monday morning. Weeks after the arrest of Okuama’s community leaders, the military personnel allegedly invaded the town, firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee for their lives.
Eyewitness reports reveal that the soldiers accessed Okuama through Okoloba community, following surveillance of the area using drones on Sunday. A widely circulated video captured the distress of a local youth, pleading for government intervention as the soldiers advanced.
One resident shared the chaos unfolding in real time: “As I speak, soldiers and some youths have invaded our community, shooting at anything that moves. They arrived by boat at Okoloba and then proceeded on foot. They are burning down the few makeshift tents we had set up.”
The terrified resident added, “We are in complete disarray. I can’t find my child. Why is this happening to us? Why are soldiers teaming up with our enemies to destroy our lives? Our leaders were arrested just weeks ago, and now, they are here to wipe out our community.”
As tension continues to escalate, Okuama residents are urgently calling on the Delta State Government and relevant authorities to step in and put an end to the violence before the situation spirals further out of control.
