Carter Efe’s Obsession With Wizkid Resurfaces After DJ Tunez Attack

Carter Efe’s latest attack on Wizkid’s official disc jockey, DJ Tunez, has reignited questions about the streamer’s unusually long and complicated relationship with the Afrobeats superstar, one that began with admiration, evolved into a tribute song, and later descended into public insults.

During a recent livestream, Carter warned fans against comparing him with DJ Tunez, making an unverified personal allegation about the disc jockey’s hygiene.

“Make una no try use me compare DJ Tunez wey be like say him dey wear dirty boxers. Una one put me for talk abi,” he said.

The latest outburst has once again dragged Wizkid into a saga that Carter Efe has kept alive for years, despite the two never developing the close relationship the comedian appeared to desire.

Carter’s connection to Wizkid dates back several years. In a 2026 account of their history, the content creator revealed that he first reached out to Wizkid in 2018, saying he had been listening to the singer’s freestyles and had developed a strong admiration for him.

That admiration eventually inspired the song that would become the centrepiece of Carter’s Wizkid story.

In July 2022, Carter Efe and singer Berri Tiga released “Machala”, a tribute to Wizkid and a song built around the nickname popularly associated with the singer.

The track exploded almost immediately, reaching No. 1 on Apple Music Nigeria and No. 2 on the TurnTable Nigeria Top 100.

For Carter, however, the song was more than another hit, he had created it out of his admiration for Wizkid, and he had hoped the singer would acknowledge it.

But Wizkid did not publicly give Carter the recognition he appeared to expect. That silence would later become the source of one of the strangest twists in the saga.

In June 2026, Carter openly admitted that his subsequent attacks on Wizkid were partly an attempt to get the singer’s attention.

Speaking to Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are, Carter pleaded for help in reaching the singer.

“Tell Wizkid to help me abeg. Help me beg him. I love Wizkid,” he said, explaining that he started insulting the singer because Wizkid did not respond to him after “Machala.”

In other words, Carter’s own explanation suggests that what often looked like hostility towards Wizkid was, at least in part, frustration from a fan who wanted to be noticed by his idol.

That admission gives a different context to years of online clashes, Carter had once openly described “Machala” as a product of his love for Wizkid.

In an earlier interview, he said he had not met Wizkid before recording the song and explained that the project was inspired by his admiration for the singer.

He later met Wizkid at a Lagos concert, where he said he simply greeted him and received a hug.. Yet, the relationship never developed into the friendship or recognition Carter apparently wanted.

Instead, the “Machala” era became surrounded by controversy, Carter and Berri Tiga eventually fought publicly over ownership and revenue from the song, with both sides giving conflicting accounts.

The song was temporarily removed from streaming platforms during the dispute, further intensifying the drama surrounding what had started as a tribute to Wizkid.

Ironically, the song that was supposed to celebrate Wizkid ended up giving Carter a much bigger public identity of his own.

In September 2026, he even declared that he was now the “Machala” recognised on the streets, rather than Wizkid, while explaining his loyalty to Davido and claiming the singer had supported him when Wizkid did not.

That statement triggered another round of reactions, with some Nigerians accusing him of being obsessed with Wizkid and questioning why he continued to invoke the singer while claiming to have moved on.

Now, with the latest attack on DJ Tunez, the Wizkid chapter of Carter Efe’s story appears far from over.

Carter once wanted Wizkid to notice him so badly that he says he resorted to insulting the singer to attract his attention.

Years after “Machala” made him famous, he is still talking about Wizkid’s camp — only this time, his target is the man behind Wizkid’s decks.

What began as admiration has therefore become one of Nigerian entertainment’s most curious celebrity sagas: a fan creates a hit in honour of his idol, becomes famous through the association, feels ignored, turns to confrontation, later admits he wanted the idol’s attention all along, and still finds himself talking about the same idol years later.
