Brighton & Hove Albion handed Arsenal their first defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday, producing a dominant 3-0 victory over the defending champions at the American Express Stadium.
Pascal Groß opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage just before half-time.
Chema Andrés then completed the rout 12 minutes into the second half, heading home from a Groß corner as Brighton secured a memorable victory.
Arsenal arrived at the Amex in strong form after winning their opening nine league matches and seven games in all competitions, but they struggled to cope with Brighton’s intensity and attacking pressure.
The hosts took control early and Groß broke the deadlock with a powerful effort from the edge of the box that went in off the post.

Arsenal had a chance to respond shortly before the break when the ball fell to Bukayo Saka inside the area following a deflected Martin Ødegaard effort, but the England forward failed to convert.
Brighton immediately punished the miss as Kostoulas found space on the edge of the box and fired past goalkeeper David Raya to make it 2-0.
Mikel Arteta made no changes at half-time in search of a comeback, but Brighton extended their advantage in the 57th minute when Andrés headed in Groß’s corner.
Arsenal struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the second half, managing only two shots on target.
Kai Havertz came closest to reducing the deficit late on but shot straight at Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after breaking through on goal.
The result leaves Arsenal second in the Premier League table on goal difference, having played one match more than Manchester City, while Brighton climbed to third, two points behind the leaders.
The defeat also ended Arsenal’s impressive run and provided a major setback to their early-season title defence.
For Brighton, the victory capped a remarkable week after their earlier wins over Coventry City and Manchester United.
Kostoulas, who scored his third goal in successive matches, was among Brighton’s standout performers, while Groß continued his excellent run of form with another goal and an influential display.
Brighton’s victory means they have now scored 11 goals in the past week, underlining the attacking threat they have developed under manager Fabian Hurzeler.
