Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after a turbulent spell lasting less than four months, following a dramatic collapse in form that saw the club lose five consecutive Premier League matches without scoring.

The decision was confirmed on Tuesday, with the club citing “recent results and performances” that fell below expected standards, despite Rosenior signing a long-term five-and-a-half-year contract when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in January.

Rosenior, who previously managed Hull City and French side Strasbourg, won 11 of his 23 matches in all competitions during his short tenure.

His final game in charge ended in a 3–0 defeat to Brighton, a result he described as “indefensible” and “unacceptable” amid growing frustration from supporters.

The club has now dropped to seventh in the Premier League table, dealing a significant blow to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

In an official statement, Chelsea said Rosenior had conducted himself with “integrity and professionalism” but added that the decision to part ways was necessary given the current trajectory of results.

“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment,” the statement read.

Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has been named interim manager and will take charge for the remainder of the season.

McFarlane previously oversaw matches earlier in the campaign following the dismissal of former boss Enzo Maresca, including a draw against Manchester City and a defeat to Fulham.

Rosenior’s brief reign also included FA Cup progress, where Chelsea recorded four victories against lower-league opposition to reach the semi-finals.

McFarlane’s first match in interim charge will be against Leeds at Wembley on Sunday, with a place in the FA Cup final at stake.
