Contractors Resume Benin-Sapele Road Rehabilitation
The development follows an assurance by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo that contractors handling road projects across the state’s three senatorial districts would return to their sites once the rainy season eased. In an October update carried by Edo Broadcasting Service, the governor said road work would pick up as the dry season set in.
Benjamin Danjuma, foreman of the earth-moving section, said persistent rainfall had made work difficult, particularly during the preparatory stage.
“The rain made it hard for us to continue, especially at the preparatory stage. As soon as the weather improved, we came back,” he said.
Danjuma said construction had reached the first level of the stone-base stage. He explained that crews would next stabilise the surface with stone base and cement before laying the final concrete layer.
“After this first level, we will move to the stabilisation stage, where we use stone base and cement. Then the final concrete layer will be laid,” he said.
Motorists and Traders Welcome Work Resumption
Road users welcomed the return of construction workers, saying they hoped rehabilitation would improve movement and commercial activity along the route.
Resident and regular road user Abdulmalik Usman said the road’s previous condition had caused hardship for motorists. “People suffered on this road when it was in a bad state. Now motorists can move more freely than before,” he said.
Trader Joy Obosheya said the poor road condition had affected business by making it harder for customers to reach nearby shops. She welcomed the contractor’s return, saying better access could help local businesses.
Driver John Kingsley also praised the resumption, saying motorists and pedestrians had struggled to use the affected section.
The work is expected to improve transportation and movement for residents, commuters and businesses that depend on the Benin-Sapele Road.
