Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has indicated that the 2027 presidential election may be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president, citing age and the weight of repeated electoral contests.

Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, made the remark during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday.

Responding to questions about whether turning 80 by 2027, would influence his political plans, he said the upcoming race would likely mark the end of his presidential ambitions.

“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” Atiku stated.

The former vice president has made several attempts to occupy Nigeria’s highest office since returning to active partisan politics in 2003.

His first presidential bid was in 1993 during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries, before he stepped down for the late Moshood Abiola.

He later contested in 2007, under the Action Congress (AC), losing to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and again in 2011, under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), where he lost to then President Goodluck Jonathan.

Atiku returned to the PDP and contested the 2019 presidential election, which he lost to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also emerged as the PDP candidate in 2023, but was defeated by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
