Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has challenged the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to release all records concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that can lawfully be made public, arguing that Nigerians deserve transparency on matters involving public officials.

Atiku made the demand amid an ongoing legal dispute over the disclosure of FBI records connected to allegations and investigations involving the Nigerian president.

The former vice president questioned the FBI’s position that releasing some of the information could pose a danger to individuals, stressing that legitimate protections for agents, confidential sources and investigative methods should be maintained, while other records eligible for disclosure should be released.

He maintained that Nigerians have a right to greater transparency over matters concerning public officials, particularly those occupying the highest office in the country.

Atiku’s position comes as the FBI reportedly seeks permission from a court to explain privately and in camera why some records relating to allegations involving Tinubu were withheld.

The ADC presidential candidate also linked the transparency debate to the wider economic difficulties confronting Nigerians.

He criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy, which he said has contributed to rising transportation, food and energy costs and placed additional pressure on households.

Atiku reiterated his position that, if elected president, he would reverse the fuel subsidy removal, arguing that government policies should prioritise the welfare and economic wellbeing of Nigerians.

The former vice president has continued to advocate greater accountability and transparency in governance, with his latest demand focused on information held by US authorities concerning Nigeria’s president.

He urged the FBI to distinguish between information whose disclosure could genuinely compromise investigations or endanger protected individuals and records that can legally be released without undermining legitimate protections.

Atiku’s demand has added a fresh political dimension to the debate over access to records concerning Tinubu, with attention now focused on which documents the US authorities may ultimately release.
