An angry man’s confrontation with a telecommunications provider over allegedly disappearing data has sparked a heated debate on social media, with subscribers sharing their own experiences and demanding better services from network operators.

The controversy started after a video trending on X showed the frustrated customer confronting a network provider over what he claimed was the sudden disappearance of data purchased for his router.
In the video, the man reportedly said: “I have lost my job because your network refused to work. I just recharged my router with data, and it disappeared in less than two minutes. I need my money back.”
His complaint quickly struck a chord with Nigerians online, many of whom claimed to have experienced situations where purchased data allegedly disappeared rapidly or network connections failed when they were needed for important activities.
The incident also triggered calls for regulatory intervention, with some users accusing telecom operators of exploiting subscribers through unreliable services and costly data plans.
Reacting to the post, @Agbere_Owei tagged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), urging the agency to investigate what the user described as exploitation by telecom operators.
@Agbere_Owei wrote: “@fccpcnigeria need to look into this exploitation by telcos. It is no longer funny. We put off Apps running underground, put off location approval for Apps yet our data keeps disappearing.”
Another user, @Uncle_Lash, said he had used Glo for years but recently became frustrated by having to repeatedly change plans because his data allegedly disappeared quickly.
@Danny94377, meanwhile, asked the complainant to identify the network involved before he purchased a router, apparently concerned about encountering a similar problem.
MTN also came under criticism, with @beejayfrmdos512 alleging that the company had become too confident that little would be done about complaints against it.
The allegation was made by the user and was not independently verified.
@melly_mania described Glo as the worst network provider in his experience, alleging that subscribers could purchase a plan only for their data to be exhausted shortly afterwards.
Similarly, @ibe_debby_ wrote: “The next is that stupid Glo network that you will subscribe for data and the next day it’s off.”
Other users broadened the discussion beyond individual operators, arguing that Nigeria’s wider telecommunications infrastructure remains inadequate despite the introduction of newer technologies.

Calling for government action, @Alade002x98 said it was time for the Federal Government to intervene, urging authorities to “call these networks provider to order or give them a sanction.”
For some subscribers, unreliable internet has become particularly frustrating when it affects work.
@legitScott captured that frustration humorously, writing: “It is better my babe cheat on me than lose a connection when am about to do a life changing interview and I have no data.”
The online reactions have reignited concerns over data consumption, network reliability, service quality and consumer protection in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
The central question emerging from the debate is whether subscribers are getting sufficient value for the money they spend on increasingly expensive data plans.
