The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has commended Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development, describing labour as the bedrock of every thriving society.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark the 2026 Workers’ Day, Soludo said employees across all sectors, from agriculture to technology, remain critical drivers of economic growth and national progress.
She noted that this year’s May Day celebration should serve as a turning point for renewed commitment by government, employers and citizens to prioritise the welfare, protection and fair treatment of workers.
“The celebration presents a fresh momentum for all stakeholders to ensure that those who work are protected, respected and adequately rewarded,” she said.
Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, described workers as the “truest heroes” of society, urging authorities to reflect on their working conditions and overall well-being.
Highlighting the importance of human capital, she paid tribute to workers across professions, acknowledging their daily sacrifices and contributions.
“To every hand that has ever held a tool, carried a load, typed through the night, swept a floor, nursed a patient, taught a child, or built something greater than themselves, today belongs to you,” she stated.
Reaffirming her solidarity with workers in Anambra State and across Nigeria, Soludo stressed that their efforts should be recognised beyond ceremonial observances.
“Labour is the foundation of every great society. Behind every road, every school, every harvest, every institution stands the tireless dignity of the Nigerian worker,” she added.

“You are not invisible. You are the backbone of our progress, and your sacrifices deserve to be honoured and celebrated, not just today, but every day.”
She further called for sustained commitment to improving workers’ conditions, expressing hope that the new month would usher in stronger policies and actions that prioritise labour rights.
“To the workers of Anambra State and Nigeria at large, we see, celebrate and honour you. Happy May Day and Happy New Month,” she said.
