Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, as the chancellor of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.

According to the statement, Bishop Kukah’s appointment is expected to strengthen the university’s global outlook by leveraging his international network to attract partnerships, promote ethical leadership, and support the development of well-rounded graduates.

Aburime described Kukah as a distinguished intellectual and cleric whose work bridges academic scholarship and social justice advocacy in Nigeria.

Highlighting his academic background, the statement noted that Kukah studied philosophy and theology at the St. Augustine Major Seminary in Jos, Plateau State, where he obtained a diploma in religious studies from the University of Ibadan, and earned a Bachelor of Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.

He also holds a Master’s degree in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford and a Ph.D from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, completed in 1990.

In addition, he has undertaken academic engagements at both the University of Oxford and Harvard University.

Beyond academia, Bishop Kukah is a prolific author and founder of the Kukah Centre, an institution known for promoting interfaith dialogue, policy reform, and research-driven advocacy.

The state government expressed confidence that his leadership as chancellor would enhance the university’s reputation and contribute to its long-term development.
