Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Her defection, announced via her verified Facebook page, also confirms her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat under her new party.

Explaining her decision, Yesufu said her move was influenced by her continued support for Peter Obi, whom she described as representing the vision of a functional and inclusive Nigeria.

According to her, recent developments within the ADC made it necessary to realign politically in order to remain consistent with that support.

In her statement, she noted that she is not only joining the NDC as a member but also as an aspirant for the FCT senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

Yesufu added that she exited the ADC after concluding her responsibilities within the party, where she had served in several roles, including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary.

Her defection comes amid a wave of high-profile exits from the ADC to the NDC, reflecting ongoing political repositioning among opposition figures.

Analysts say the development could influence the balance of power within the opposition as parties and key actors prepare for the next election cycle.
