The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced temporary traffic diversions in parts of Abuja ahead of the commissioning of the two main carriageways of the Southern Expressway (OSEX), one of the flagship road projects under the administration of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The traffic advisory forms part of activities marking the commencement of the commissioning and flag-off of 31 infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the FCTA, day one of the commissioning exercise will focus on the official opening of the Southern Expressway (OSEX) corridor stretching from Ring Road I (Apo Bridge) to Ring Road II (Kabusa Junction).

As a result, motorists are expected to experience temporary road closures and diversions around the newly constructed bridge along the Apo-Kabusa Road.

The FCTA outlined the following traffic restrictions: Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway Slip Road Closure

Traffic on the slip road from the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway near the cemetery area will be temporarily shut to motorists during the commissioning event.

Also, vehicles approaching from the Apo ShopRite axis will be redirected through Oladipo Diya Road, connecting through Cedacrest Junction and adjoining routes.

Motorists coming from Apo Resettlement will not be allowed to proceed beyond the AYM Gas Station until the event concludes.

To ease congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow, the FCTA advised road users to utilize Ring Road II at Kabusa Junction, which will serve as the major alternative route connecting commuters to other parts of the city.

The administration disclosed that all diversions and restrictions will be activated by 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Traffic management officials and security personnel will be deployed across affected locations to guide motorists and maintain order throughout the commissioning exercise.

The FCTA urged residents, commuters, and motorists to comply with all traffic directives, obey diversion signs, and cooperate with law enforcement officers to minimize disruptions.

The commissioning of the OSEX carriageways is expected to improve connectivity between key districts in Abuja and represents the first phase of a broader infrastructure development programme that will see 31 projects commissioned across the FCT.
