Calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), echoed at a service of songs and tributes on Saturday for the late President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Igbo leaders have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to honor Iwuanyanwu’s last wish by releasing Kanu and immortalizing the late statesman.

The Trumpet reports that Kanu remains in custody with the Department of State Services (DSS) despite numerous pleas from prominent Igbo leaders for a political resolution to his detention.

In heartfelt tributes, speakers at the event emphasized that Iwuanyanwu’s final mission was to secure Kanu’s release. They urged President Tinubu to fulfill Iwuanyanwu’s wish, adding that the late Ohanaeze leader should be honored with a lasting memorial.

The Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, the influential body representing Igbo women, joined the call for Kanu’s release and for Iwuanyanwu’s immortalization. Lolo Kate Ezeofor, President General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria, stated, “May God bless President Bola Tinubu as he grants our plea to immortalize Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and release Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.”

At Iwuanyanwu’s lying-in-state at the former Eastern Nigeria Government Lodge in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State paid tribute, describing Iwuanyanwu as a visionary leader and unifier. “He was a trailblazer in media, sports, industry, and aviation—an Iroko tree and bridge builder who left a profound legacy,” Mbah said.

Former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu, in his tribute, lauded Iwuanyanwu’s towering presence and impactful personality. Chief Garry Igariwey, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, described Iwuanyanwu as a dedicated advocate for Igbo land and greatness.

“We implore Mr. President to heed the call and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Igariwey added.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretary General, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, reflected on Iwuanyanwu’s unyielding commitment to sharing the Igbo story, including his experiences during the Biafran conflict. Professor Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, also urged the federal government to immortalize Chief Iwuanyanwu in honor of his legacy.
