The National Universities Commission (NUC) has commenced verification of 18 degree programs, paving the way for the official launch of the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE). This crucial step follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval on March 15, 2024, converting the former Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy into a full-fledged university to advance health and social welfare education.
FUAHSE’s inaugural senate has greenlit 22 programs across five faculties in allied healthcare, with the NUC initially verifying 18 of these for the university’s take-off in the 2024/2025 academic session. The verification team arrived to assess the institution’s preparedness and suitability for delivering top-tier health science education.
Mr. Jude Akubue, NUC Academic Planner and team leader for the verification, highlighted the significance of the occasion: “Today marks a historic step for FUAHSE, and we commend President Bola Tinubu for this transformative approval,” Akubue said, noting that the NUC’s acting Executive Secretary, Amb. Chris Maiyaki, sanctioned the verification.

The NUC team comprises experts from notable institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, and Babcock University. “We will use the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) as our benchmark,” Akubue added, explaining that 70% of each program’s curriculum will align with national standards, while the remaining 30% allows the university to tailor programs to its unique mission.
Prof. John Emaimo, FUAHSE’s acting Vice Chancellor, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for upgrading the college into Nigeria’s first health science university. “With this verification, FUAHSE is officially set to contribute to society by training the next generation of healthcare professionals,” Emaimo stated, emphasizing the university’s mission to meet Nigeria’s growing healthcare workforce needs.
The Vice Chancellor assured that the institution’s staff and management are fully prepared to support a seamless verification process, underscoring the university’s commitment to achieving full accreditation and fulfilling its role in shaping future healthcare leaders.
