The senatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Olanrewaju Osho, has called for innovative solutions to the territory’s challenges, proposing a model cattle ranching project to address the persistent problem of cattle roaming the streets.
Key Highlights
- SDP FCT senatorial candidate Olanrewaju Osho proposes a model cattle ranch in the FCT.
- He wants the EU as his first partner after observing cow dung near its Abuja office.
- Osho says government must create an enabling environment for herders before ending open grazing.
- He says road construction alone will not solve the FCT’s many challenges.
- He urges residents to support change in governance and leadership.
Osho made the proposal after visiting the European Union (EU) office, opposite the South African High Commission in Abuja, where he said he observed cow dung littering the road.
According to him, the situation highlights the need for a sustainable approach to cattle management, adding that he immediately saw an opportunity to partner with the EU to establish a model cattle ranch in the FCT.
“I can imagine how irritated the EU and South African High Commission are about the menace. I immediately saw in that problem the opportunity of EU as my first partner for a model cattle ranch in FCT as senator-elect,” he said.
Model Ranch to End Open Grazing
Osho explained that the proposed ranch would demonstrate the benefits of organised cattle rearing and help change public perceptions about alternatives to allowing cattle to roam freely on the streets.
He stressed that the government must first create an enabling environment for herders before expecting them to abandon the practice of open grazing.
“Government has to create an enabling environment for the herdsmen first before they can be taken off the street. This is smart thinking,” he added.
“Not Just Road Construction”
The SDP candidate also criticised what he described as the narrow focus of development efforts in the FCT, arguing that road construction alone would not resolve the territory’s numerous challenges.
While acknowledging the road projects undertaken by the FCT administration, Osho said other pressing issues required urgent attention and innovative policy interventions.
“There are too many problems in FCT. The minister is doing only road in three years and we are grateful for that,” he said.

He warned that retaining the existing approach to governance could worsen the challenges facing residents, insisting that the territory needed a change in direction and leadership capable of developing practical solutions.
According to Osho, an effective senator could help address several of the FCT’s challenges through creative thinking, policy initiatives and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.
He appealed to residents to recognise the problems confronting the territory and support the changes necessary to improve governance and living conditions.
“FCT needs help. May God open our eyes to see these challenges and have the courage to do what is right,” he said.
