The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members rescued after being abducted along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Imo State have reportedly been offered the option of completing their national service in any of the six South-West states, allowing them to continue with the current batch without returning to locations they may consider unsafe.

Key Highlights

  • Twenty prospective corps members rescued after an abduction in Imo State have reportedly been offered South-West postings.
  • The survivors can reportedly choose Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo or Ekiti for their service year.
  • The graduates were abducted on October 1, 2026, along the Owerri–Onitsha Road near Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
  • Security agencies announced their rescue on October 7 after search-and-rescue operations.
  • While security officials said they were unaware of ransom payments, families reportedly claimed they paid about ₦6 million per abducted graduate.
  • The NYSC had not publicly confirmed the reported posting arrangement at the time of the reports.

Rescued NYSC Members Offered South-West Posting Option

The 20 graduates were reportedly offered the opportunity to choose any of the six South-West states to complete their mandatory one-year national service.

A parent who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity confirmed the arrangement, saying the survivors could continue with the current NYSC batch in a state of their choice within the region.

The option is expected to allow the prospective corps members to serve closer to familiar surroundings following the traumatic experience of their abduction.

However, the reported arrangement had not been publicly confirmed by the NYSC spokesperson at the time of the reports.

How 20 Prospective Corps Members Were Abducted in Imo

The graduates were abducted on October 1, 2026, along the Owerri–Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

They were travelling in two commercial buses operated by Uko Akwa Ibom Motors from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen reportedly attacked the vehicles and took the occupants into a nearby forest.

Reports indicated that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million for each victim, amounting to ₦1 billion for the 20 graduates. The demands were reportedly reduced during negotiations.

The incident raised fresh concerns about the safety of interstate road travel for prospective corps members, particularly those travelling long distances to attend orientation camps.

Security Agencies Announce Rescue of Abducted Graduates

Security agencies announced the rescue of the 20 prospective corps members on October 7 at Amakohia Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

The operation reportedly involved the police, military and Department of State Services (DSS), following sustained search-and-rescue efforts.

The Imo State Police Command and the Force Public Relations Officer maintained that pressure from security personnel led to the victims’ release, adding that they had no knowledge of ransom payments.

However, the families reportedly disputed that account, claiming they contributed approximately ₦6 million per graduate to secure their release.

The competing accounts have not been reconciled in the reports cited.

NYSC Director-General Visits Survivors

Following their rescue, the graduates reportedly underwent medical evaluation at a DSS facility in Owerri.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, visited the survivors alongside security commanders before they later reunited with their families in Ibadan.

The reported South-West posting option would allow the graduates to resume their service year while avoiding a return to the circumstances and travel routes associated with the incident.

The arrangement also highlights the practical challenges of helping corps members recover from traumatic experiences while ensuring they fulfil their national service obligations.

Six South-West States Available for Selection

Under the reported arrangement, the survivors can choose from the following states:

  • Lagos State
  • Ogun State
  • Oyo State
  • Osun State
  • Ondo State
  • Ekiti State

The flexibility could help the graduates complete their service in locations closer to family support networks and familiar communities.

Nevertheless, the final implementation details, including the formal approval process and confirmation of the available states, would need clarification from the NYSC.

Imo Abduction Renews Debate Over NYSC Safety

The incident has renewed debate about the safety of prospective corps members travelling across the country and whether deployment arrangements adequately account for regional security risks.

Critics have questioned the practice of posting graduates far from their home regions when some interstate routes face kidnapping threats.

The abduction also revived wider discussions about the relevance and safety of the NYSC scheme, which requires eligible Nigerian graduates to undertake a period of national service.

In June 2026, the Federal Executive Council reportedly approved reforms that included risk-sensitive deployment measures, a technology-driven call-up process and an extension of the orientation programme.

The extent to which these measures will reduce exposure to security threats remains an important issue as the scheme continues to adapt to Nigeria’s security challenges.

Police Continue Investigation Into Imo Kidnap

Security authorities have maintained that efforts to apprehend those responsible for the abduction are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the reported posting flexibility offers the 20 survivors a possible route back to their service commitments after days in captivity.

The families’ claims about ransom payments, alongside the reported offer of alternative postings, have also placed renewed attention on the human and logistical challenges facing the NYSC.
