Oyo Police Arrest Indian National, Two Others in Ibadan
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrests in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade.
According to the police, the command became aware of the incident after a video of the confrontation circulated on social media on October 13.
Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga subsequently directed officers to investigate the matter and apprehend those suspected of participating in the alleged assault.
The suspects were taken into custody, while the investigation was transferred to the Special Enquiry Bureau at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.
The police said investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the individual roles of the people involved.
How Truck Parking Dispute Escalated Into Alleged Assault
According to the police account, the confrontation began with a disagreement over where a truck should be parked after delivering goods to the company.
The truck owner, 47-year-old Akinpelu Sarafa, reportedly told investigators that the driver objected to parking in a designated spot inside the company’s premises because he feared the position could damage the vehicle’s tyres.
The driver was allegedly required to park there, after which one of the tyres reportedly burst.
The disagreement escalated when the driver requested that the company replace the damaged tyre. The company allegedly declined the request, prompting the driver to use the truck to block the main entrance.
The situation subsequently developed into a physical confrontation involving the truck drivers, security personnel and the Indian national.
These details form part of the account being investigated by the police. The precise circumstances and responsibility of each person involved remain subject to the ongoing inquiry.
Victims Identified as Truck Driver, Assistant
The two victims were identified as 34-year-old Ridwan Olajide, the truck driver, and 37-year-old Taiwo Yinusa, his assistant, commonly referred to as a motor boy.
Both reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation and were taken to a hospital in the Academy area of Ibadan for treatment.
DSP Ayanlade said police investigators visited the victims to obtain their statements as part of efforts to establish what happened.
Their accounts are expected to form part of the evidence being examined by investigators alongside the video footage and statements from other people connected to the incident.
Viral Video Shows Chaotic Scene at Company Premises
The incident attracted widespread attention after footage from the company’s premises circulated on social media.
The video, reportedly recorded at the facility around Kilometer 12 of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, showed a chaotic confrontation involving the drivers and several other people.
In the footage described by media reports, a man identified as the Indian national appeared to strike one of the drivers with a stick, while other individuals restrained a second man. The restrained man was also reportedly kicked while on the ground.
People at the scene were heard demanding the truck keys, while the drivers resisted handing them over, insisting that the vehicles belonged to them.
The footage prompted widespread reactions, with social media users calling for accountability and urging the authorities to investigate the alleged treatment of the Nigerian drivers.
However, the video alone does not establish the full sequence of events or the legal responsibility of every person seen in it. Those questions remain for investigators to determine.
Police Transfer Case to Special Enquiry Bureau
The Oyo State Police Command said the matter had been transferred to its Special Enquiry Bureau at the headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, for further investigation.
The bureau is expected to examine the circumstances of the dispute, obtain statements from the parties involved and assess available evidence.
Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade stressed that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of nationality or social status.
The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work.
As of the latest reports cited in the account, the three suspects remained in police custody, while the two victims were receiving medical care. No widely reported official statement from Karma Agric Feeds and Foods Limited had been issued at the time of the arrests.
