Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the reported abduction of about 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, warning that insecurity must not become an accepted part of life in Nigeria.

Obi, reacting to the incident, expressed concern over the safety of the young Nigerians who were travelling to their orientation camp when they were reportedly abducted.

  • Obi urged the government to strengthen the protection of lives and property across the country.

Obi Condemns NYSC Abduction

According to Obi, the incident is another disturbing indication of the worsening security situation in the country, particularly the growing danger faced by travellers on Nigerian roads.

“The abduction of approximately 20 prospective NYSC members travelling to their orientation camp is yet another distressing indication of the worsening insecurity in our country,” Obi said.

He noted that the affected young Nigerians were preparing to serve the country but could not travel safely, leaving their families increasingly worried about the possibility of their loved ones becoming victims of kidnapping.

‘Insecurity Must Not Become a Norm’

Obi stressed that protecting lives and property remains a primary responsibility of government, urging authorities to take decisive action rather than responding only after citizens have suffered harm.

“Protecting lives and property is the government’s foremost responsibility. We cannot continue to regard insecurity as an ordinary occurrence or act only after people’s lives have been disrupted,” he said.

The former governor called for the immediate and safe rescue of all the abducted prospective corps members and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.

“I call for the immediate and safe rescue of all the abducted corps members and the arrest of those responsible,” Obi said.

Obi Calls for Safer Roads

He added that Nigeria must become a country where young people can travel, work and participate in national service without living under the constant fear of kidnapping.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of prospective corps members and other Nigerians travelling along major routes, with fresh calls for stronger security measures to protect citizens.
