The Anambra State Police Command has urged parents, guardians and caregivers to take extra precautions to protect schoolchildren as heavy rainfall and flooding continue to affect parts of the state.
The warning follows a recent flood incident in Awka South Local Government Area that resulted in the death of a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Success Ezenwafor.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued the alert in a statement on Wednesday, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid exposing children to potentially dangerous floodwaters.
Success was reportedly travelling to school last Tuesday, when the bus conveying him and other passengers became trapped in floodwaters at Isiagu and overturned.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle, comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued alive by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command with the assistance of concerned residents.

The survivors were subsequently taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical attention.
Success, however, was swept away by the floodwaters during the incident. His whereabouts remains unknown until the following morning, when his remains were recovered.
The state police command subsequently urged parents and other caregivers to exercise greater caution during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly when transporting children to and from school.
The warning comes as parts of Anambra State continue to experience rainfall and flooding, with the police stressing the need for residents to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk to lives and property.
