Gunmen Reportedly Storm Ayilamo Community
An eyewitness who spoke to The Trumpet said the attackers arrived towards daybreak and began shooting sporadically. The source said at least four people were killed, but their identities had not been disclosed as of the time of filing.
Residents reportedly fled their homes amid fears of further violence. Local sources blamed gunmen suspected to be Fulani herders, but the identity and affiliation of the attackers had not been independently established.
Houses and Crops Reportedly Damaged
A local source told The Trumpet that the attackers were heavily armed and opened fire after entering the community. The source also alleged that some houses were set ablaze and food crops destroyed.
The extent of property damage and the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified. The chairman of Logo Local Government Area, Clement Kav, confirmed that an attack had occurred but called for assistance to help restore peace.
Ayilamo has faced other attacks this month. In a separate incident on September 10, police said four officers and seven civilians were killed after attackers invaded the community; Premium Times reported the police account. That earlier attack is distinct from Saturday’s reported incident.
Residents Appeal for Government Intervention
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed concern about what he described as recurring attacks and killings in the community. He appealed to the Benue State Government and security agencies to take urgent steps to address the violence.
Former soldier Atsanga Louis also criticised what he described as a lack of sufficient commitment by state and federal governments to resolving the recurring conflict. He called for stronger and sustained efforts by the authorities.
Police Yet to Comment
Attempts to obtain a response from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing. Calls to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Aondongu Peter, were not answered.
