US President Donald Trump has announced plans to immediately ban CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, deepening his long-running disputes with sections of the American media.

Key Highlights

  • Trump announced an immediate ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
  • The announcement came in a lengthy Truth Social post accusing the outlets of publishing “fiction or lies.”
  • Trump did not cite any specific report that triggered the decision.
  • Journalists from CNN and Politico reportedly remained on White House grounds shortly after the announcement.
  • Trump hinted that more outlets could be affected, without naming them.
  • The move follows earlier restrictions on The Associated Press and past clashes with reporters such as Jim Acosta.

Trump disclosed the decision in a lengthy post on Truth Social on Friday, accusing the three news organisations of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fiction or lies” about his administration.

However, the president did not point to specific reports that triggered the move, leaving the exact nature and scope of the proposed restrictions unclear.

It was not immediately clear whether the announcement would prevent journalists working for the affected organisations from entering the White House complex or limit their access to certain presidential events and areas.

Reporters from CNN and Politico were reportedly still on the White House grounds shortly after Trump made the announcement, according to a detailed Axios report on the episode.

No Single Reason Given

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said there was no single reason for the decision, pointing instead to what he described as a pattern of coverage spanning several years.

He also suggested that additional media organisations could be affected, although he did not name them.

A Pattern Of Media Clashes

The announcement comes amid a series of confrontations between Trump and the White House press corps since his return to office in January 2025.

In February 2025, the White House announced that it would assume control of the presidential press pool, ending the long-standing arrangement under which access was managed by the White House Correspondents’ Association.

The administration also restricted Associated Press journalists and photographers from certain presidential spaces, including the Oval Office and Air Force One, after the news organisation continued using the term “Gulf of Mexico” rather than “Gulf of America.”

The Associated Press subsequently challenged the restrictions in court.

Trump has repeatedly clashed with journalists during presidential engagements and criticised media organisations over reports he disputes.

During his first term, the White House revoked the press credentials of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta. CNN challenged the decision in court, and Acosta’s credentials were later restored.

Trump has also taken legal action against several major US and international media organisations, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the BBC.

The latest announcement could draw further scrutiny over the legal basis and practical scope of any restrictions imposed on CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

The BBC said it had contacted the White House for comment on Trump’s announcement. For more updates on this developing story, follow us on X.
