Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has described his decision to join the club from Newcastle United as an “easy decision”, saying Liverpool’s size, ambition and determination to sign him convinced him to move to Anfield.
The Sweden international joined Liverpool from Newcastle on transfer deadline day in September 2025 for a British-record £125 million fee.

Isak Explains Why He Joined Liverpool
Isak said Liverpool’s status as one of the biggest clubs in football and its ambition played a major role in his decision to leave Newcastle.
“Liverpool is a massive club, and everything about the club made it pretty clear,” Isak told BBC Sport’s The Football Interview.
“The club’s ambition and the club’s will to get me in as well. It was a big part of it.”
The 26-year-old said the combination of Liverpool’s ambitions and its efforts to secure his signature made the move straightforward for him.
Injury-Hit First Season At Anfield
Isak endured a difficult first season at Liverpool, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals before a leg injury ruled him out from December until April.
Despite the setback, the striker said he never regretted his decision to leave Newcastle.
“No, never. I would never think like that,” Isak said.
The forward has made a brighter start to the new campaign, scoring three times in his first four Premier League appearances.

Isak Regains Confidence With Sweden
Isak also represented Sweden at the World Cup during the summer, scoring once and providing three assists before Sweden were eliminated by France in the last 32.
The tournament provided the striker with an opportunity to regain his rhythm and confidence following his injury problems.
“Playing for your country in a World Cup is a dream of most people,” Isak said.
“With the injuries last season, the World Cup was perfect. I had that period where I could play and gain rhythm and form.”
Iraola Wants Isak To Press From The Front
Back at Liverpool, new head coach Andoni Iraola has asked Isak to play an active role in the team’s defensive work, particularly when pressing opponents from the front.
According to Isak, Iraola wants Liverpool’s forwards to defend in positions that can allow the team to launch quick attacks after regaining possession.
“He said ‘score goals’, but he wants me to defend,” Isak explained.
“The way we defend, we defend to score goals, so defending, in the end, is an attacking weapon.”
Liverpool have adopted a high-intensity approach under Iraola, with Isak believing the system could create more opportunities for the club’s attacking players.
Isak Focused On Liverpool Trophies
Isak, who has scored 60 Premier League goals, said his main objective is to help Liverpool compete for and win trophies rather than focus on personal targets.
“Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies,” he said.
“I want to score every game. Everyone is different. Some like to set targets and some don’t. I’m the one that doesn’t.”
Isak will now look to build on his improved start to the campaign as Liverpool pursue success across domestic and European competitions.
