Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pledged to protect veterinary doctors and para-veterinary professionals in the state against occupational diseases and other hazards associated with their duties.

Fintiri made the commitment when the leadership of the Veterinary Doctors Association of Nigeria (VDAN), Adamawa State branch, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Yola.

The governor said his administration recognises the important role played by veterinary professionals in the development of the livestock sector and the state’s broader economic growth.

He said the government has created an enabling environment for veterinarians to contribute meaningfully to agriculture and livestock production, stressing that their services were essential to the wellbeing of both animals and humans.

Fintiri recalled the death of a veterinary doctor, identified as Dr. Moses, in Yola several years ago after reportedly contracting brucellosis in the course of his professional duties.

According to him, the incident underscored the occupational risks faced by veterinary professionals and the need for government to provide adequate protection and support for those working in the sector.

The governor said his administration would continue to prioritise the safety and welfare of veterinary personnel while strengthening facilities and infrastructure within the livestock sector.

He disclosed that cattle markets and abattoirs across the state had been repositioned, while work was ongoing on a major cattle market which he described as one of the largest in Africa.

Fintiri said the completion of the facility would further boost livestock-related activities in the state and create additional opportunities for veterinary doctors and other professionals in the sector.

On the association’s request for improved allowances, the governor said the demand would be carefully studied to determine appropriate action.

He assured the veterinary professionals that the government would provide whatever was due to them within the available framework.

Earlier, the Chairman of VDAN in Adamawa State, Dr. Kiliyobas Caleb, said the delegation was at the Government House to appreciate the governor for his support and contributions to the development of the livestock sector.

Caleb commended Fintiri for rehabilitating abattoirs, improving meat production and promoting public health, describing the administration’s interventions as significant to the growth of livestock production in the state.

He also appreciated the governor for appointing members of the association to key positions, including two permanent secretary positions and the office of chief of staff.

The VDAN chairman further commended the recent employment of 19 veterinarians and more than 50 para-veterinary professionals into the state Ministry of Livestock.

The association described livestock production as a major contributor to Adamawa’s economy, stressing that veterinary professionals remained central to animal health, disease prevention, disease control and public health protection.

It noted that veterinarians played a critical role in preventing and controlling zoonotic and infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, rabies, Lassa fever and avian influenza.

The association assured governor Fintiri of its continued support and commitment to the success of his administration, particularly in strengthening livestock development and protecting public health.
