Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has revealed that a simple administrative error during his days with Nigeria’s Under-17 team was responsible for the football name that would later become synonymous with his illustrious career.

Mikel disclosed that he originally intended to use Michael, but a mistake in the team’s documentation saw the name printed as Mikel, ahead of the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Finland.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, which he co-hosts with Chris McHardy, the former Chelsea midfielder explained how the error happened.

“I changed my name. In the U-17s, when they went to print the name, I gave them Michael, they came back with Mikel,” he said.

Rather than correcting the mistake, the young midfielder decided to keep the name, which eventually became an integral part of his football identity.

The name stuck as Mikel rose to prominence internationally and later moved to Europe, eventually establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished midfielders.

Born John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, the player became widely known as John Obi Mikel and later formally adopted the Mikel name.

Historical accounts also trace the spelling to an error made while Nigeria was preparing its squad documentation for the 2003 Under-17 World Championship.

Mikel went on to enjoy a distinguished 11-year spell with Chelsea, making 249 appearances for the London club and winning major honours including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and two Premier League titles.

His international career was equally significant. Mikel represented Nigeria from 2005 to 2019, earning 91 senior caps and scoring six goals. He was also part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The midfielder’s career also included spells with clubs in Norway, China, England, Turkey and Kuwait after his Chelsea departure.

What began as a seemingly minor printing mistake during his teenage years ultimately became one of the most recognisable names in Nigerian football.

For Mikel, an administrative error that could easily have been corrected instead became a defining part of his identity on the football stage.
