The Ogun State House of Assembly has cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of allegations of embezzlement linked to his removal from office in 2024 and resolved to convert his impeachment into a resignation.

The decision was reached during Wednesday’s plenary at the assembly complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, following the presentation of the Committee of the Whole House report by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi.

The report stemmed from a motion filed by Oluomo on March 31, seeking either exoneration from the allegations or the presentation of evidence to support the claim, citing his constitutional right to fair hearing under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Ajayi moved for the adoption of the committee’s report, which was seconded by Mr. Yusuf Amosun and unanimously approved through a voice vote.

According to the assembly, the allegations of embezzlement was never included in the official notice of removal served on Oluomo, and a review of the available evidence found no basis to sustain the accusation.

The lawmakers consequently resolved that the allegation should no longer form part of the reasons for the former Speaker’s removal from office.

The House also overturned Oluomo’s impeachment, commuting it to a resignation, saying the decision was taken in the interest of camaraderie, unity and harmony among members of the Assembly.

Oluomo was removed as speaker in January 2024 by members of the Assembly after a leadership crisis. He had consistently denied allegations of financial misconduct associated with his removal.
