The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 36-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed during an argument in Etayip Community, Ikom Local Government Area. The police said the prime suspect has been arrested, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Confirming the incident to journalists in Calabar, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, said the report was received at the Ikom Police Division.

 

According to him, the incident was reported by Ndifon Nkang Ndifon of Aya Street, Ikom, and Felix Agbor of Mankono Village, Ikom, who serve as the Task Force Chairman and Youth Leader of Asse-Asin Community, respectively.

ASP Akata said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, Michael Ndifon, 42, allegedly stabbed Charles Ekuma Eze, 36, on the right side of his rib with a dagger during an argument.

 

“The victim was immediately rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, for treatment but was later referred to the Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment,” the police spokesman said.

 

He added that the deceased’s body has been deposited in the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The police spokesperson further confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, while the suspected murder weapon has been recovered and retained as an exhibit.

 

According to ASP Akata, the matter will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and discreet investigation.

 

He assured residents that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served and urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
