Colombia secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City, ending the Black Stars’ campaign with a disciplined performance.

Jhon Arias scored the game’s only goal in the 14th minute, finishing off a well-delivered cross from Luis Suarez after Ghana’s defence failed to clear the danger.

The South Americans dominated much of the contest and could have won by a wider margin but were repeatedly frustrated by Ghana goalkeeper, Lawrence Zigi, who produced several outstanding saves to keep his side in the game.

Ghana started brightly, with Thomas Partey sending a long-range effort just wide inside the opening minute. However, the West Africans struggled to create clear-cut chances after falling behind.

Both teams were forced into early substitutions due to injuries. Colombia lost striker Jhon Cordoba to a groin problem, while Ghana defender Marvin Senaya exited with a hamstring injury.

Colombia continued to press before halftime, with Luis Diaz, Luis Suarez and Johan Mojica all going close, only for Zigi to deny them with a string of impressive saves.

After the break, Colombia maintained control despite withdrawing captain James Rodriguez at halftime.

Substitute Richard Rios and Gustavo Puerta both tested Zigi, while Diaz also had a goal ruled out for offside before missing another one-on-one opportunity.

Partey came closest to equalising for Ghana midway through the second half, but his low strike drifted narrowly wide.

Colombia continued to create opportunities through Diaz, Juan Fernando Quintero and Davinson Sanchez, but the scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.

The defeat brought Ghana’s World Cup journey to an end after another disappointing attacking display, with the Black Stars failing to register a shot on target during the match.

Colombia, meanwhile, advanced to the last 16 with another clean sheet, extending their impressive unbeaten run in normal time at the World Cup and reinforcing their status as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

The result also leaves Morocco and Egypt as the only remaining African teams in the competition after Ghana’s exit.
