The Gbenga Fawehinmi Foundation (GFF) has endorsed the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) education into Nigeria’s secondary school curriculum, saying early exposure to emerging technologies will better prepare young people for the demands of the digital economy.

The foundation made the call during an inter-school debate competition held on Thursday in Ondo, Ondo State, as part of activities marking its 10th anniversary.
The debate, themed “Voices of the Future: Debating AI’s Impact,” brought together secondary school students to examine the opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the event, the foundation’s Head of Operations, Governance and Partnership, Joshua Aremu, said AI has become one of the most transformative technologies globally, making it essential for students to acquire relevant digital skills from an early age.
According to him, introducing AI education at the secondary school level would not only improve students’ digital literacy but also stimulate greater interest in learning.
“We are in the computer age, and artificial intelligence is shaping every aspect of society. One way to encourage students to embrace learning is to meet them where their interests lie, especially at an age when many of them are fascinated by technology and computers,” Aremu said.
Founder and Chairman of the foundation, Gbenga Fawehinmi, said the debate competition was organised to expose students to the growing influence of artificial intelligence while celebrating the organisation’s decade-long commitment to educational development.
“This year is particularly significant as the Gbenga Fawehinmi Foundation celebrates its 10th anniversary—a decade of empowering students and helping to shape their future,” he said.
“In this milestone year, we have expanded our mission to embrace Artificial Intelligence education, exposing young people to emerging technologies and preparing them for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.”
Fawehinmi described artificial intelligence as a transformative force capable of reshaping industries and societies, stressing that initiatives such as the debate would encourage critical thinking, leadership and effective communication among students.

Also speaking, the foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Olabanji Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to improving access to quality education for underprivileged children while expanding its programmes to include AI literacy.
“Today, our mission has evolved to include pioneering Artificial Intelligence education in secondary schools, preparing Nigeria’s next generation of innovators to lead—not merely participate—in the digital age,” he said.
He added that the debate competition was designed not only to identify outstanding students but also to promote confidence, analytical thinking and the exchange of ideas on issues shaping the future.
The event formed part of the foundation’s activities to commemorate its 10th anniversary and its renewed focus on equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
