The Kano State government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, on behalf of the state government.

The statement said Governor Abba Yusuf congratulated Muslim faithful across the state and beyond for witnessing the new Islamic year, which begins with the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

He called on the people to offer special prayers for peace, unity and development in Kano State and Nigeria.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of residents through policies and programmes aimed at delivering people-oriented governance.

He urged the people of the state to continue supporting government efforts towards achieving sustainable development and improved standards of living.

The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar used by Muslims around the world.
