Iran’s football federation has confirmed that its allocated fan tickets for the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been revoked, days before the competition begins, triggering accusations of unfair treatment and political interference.

Key Highlights:

  • Iran says its allocated fan tickets for the 2026 World Cup have been revoked by US authorities.
  • The move affects supporters who had already begun purchasing tickets.
  • Iran calls the decision unfair and contrary to FIFA competition rules.
  • The issue adds to ongoing visa and entry tensions involving Iranian officials and staff.

The tournament, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is scheduled to kick off on Thursday, with Iran set to face New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles, followed by matches against Belgium and Egypt in Seattle and Los Angeles respectively.

According to the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), FIFA regulations typically grant each participating nation around 8% of tickets for their matches to distribute to supporters.

The federation said it had already begun selling tickets before being informed that the allocation would no longer be honored, leaving many fans who had made travel arrangements in uncertainty.

Iran’s football authorities described the decision as “contrary to the spirit of international competition,” warning that it undermines fairness among participating nations and raises concerns about external interference in football governance.

The situation adds to a series of logistical and diplomatic challenges surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.

The team previously relocated its training base from the United States to Mexico, citing visa-related complications, while reports also indicate that several members of its backroom staff were denied entry into the US.

Iranian officials have also clashed with tournament organizers over entry conditions for individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an issue that has drawn scrutiny from US authorities.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that while players will be allowed entry, certain individuals may face restrictions based on security assessments.

Iran was notably absent from FIFA’s recent congress in Canada after several officials were denied entry at the border, further highlighting the growing friction between the federation and host nations ahead of the global football showcase.
