The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has raised serious concerns over the worsening state of insecurity, cult violence, police extortion, and social media recklessness in the country, warning that urgent intervention is needed to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

key Highlights:

  • The Nigeria Union of Journalists raised concern over insecurity, cult violence, and police extortion in Delta State.
  • It condemned the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oyo State and called for their rescue.
  • The group also criticized cult killings in Warri and urged arrests of perpetrators.
  • It accused police officers of extorting motorists and called for disciplinary action.
  • The NUJ urged stronger security and better governance to restore order in affected areas.

The position formed part of resolutions reached during the chapel’s monthly congress held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the NUJ secretariat in Warri, Delta State.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the congress condemned the disturbing wave of insecurity across Nigeria, particularly the reported abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oyo State by suspected terrorists.

The union expressed deep sorrow over reports that a male teacher attached to one of the affected schools was beheaded, while the abducted pupils are allegedly facing torture and harsh conditions in captivity.

The congress called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify rescue operations and ensure the immediate release of the kidnapped children and other victims across the country.

The chapel also decried the recent cult-related killings in Warri, specifically in the Cemetery and Iyara areas, where two persons were reportedly stabbed to death during separate clashes involving rival cult groups.

Describing the killings as unacceptable, the journalists urged security agencies to track down and prosecute those behind the violence.

The NUJ further called on the Warri South Local Government Chairman, Isaac Agbateyiniro, to take stronger security measures to combat cultism and restore peace, while advising parents and guardians to steer their children away from criminal activities.

On infrastructure and urban management, the union praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for the construction of major flyovers at PTI Junction, DSC Roundabout and Enerhen Junction.

However, the union lamented that indiscriminate parking by tricycle operators and roadside trading beneath the Enerhen flyover has turned the area into a traffic nightmare and environmental eyesore.

The congress urged the Uvwie Local Government Chairman, Anthony Ofoni, to urgently clear and decongest the area to restore free traffic flow.

The issue of alleged police extortion also dominated discussions, with the congress condemning reported harassment and illegal collection of money from motorists and commercial transport operators across Warri, Uvwie, Udu and Ughelli.

The NUJ therefore called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the state Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, to take decisive steps against extortion and misconduct among officers.
