The Delta State Police Command has rescued a two-year-old child allegedly abducted in Warri and reunited the victim with the parents after swift intervention by officers of the Quick Response Squad (QRS).

The command said the rescue operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat child trafficking and related crimes across the state.

  • Child identified and reunited with parents on May 11.
  • Police say suspect implicated others; probe ongoing (SP Bright Edafe / Yemi Oyeniyi).

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Asaba.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on May 10, 2026, at about 9:15am at Igbudu Market, Warri, where a suspect identified as Fejiro Obaduemu, 29, was intercepted by residents while allegedly carrying the child inside a sack.

The unusual circumstance reportedly raised suspicion among residents, who accused the suspect of attempting to steal the child.

Edafe said police officers of the QRS swiftly responded to the scene and prevented the suspect from being lynched by a mob.

“The suspect, who sustained injuries from the mob attack, was rescued by operatives and taken to the Police Clinic, Warri, for treatment before being taken into custody for investigation,” the statement said.

Police said further investigation carried out on May 11 led to the identification and tracing of the child’s parents.

The child was subsequently reunited with the family in the presence of leaders of the Hausa community in Warri.

Preliminary findings, according to the police, revealed that the suspect allegedly confessed that he was sent by another unidentified suspect in Warri to steal the child.

The command said efforts were ongoing to arrest other persons linked to the crime and dismantle the wider child trafficking network.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Yemi Oyeniyi, assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting children and tackling all forms of human trafficking.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities involving children to the nearest police station.
