The All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta State Assembly Screening Committee has released the outcome of its screening exercise for the party’s state assembly primary election, with 36 out of 82 aspirants disqualified from participating in the exercise.

The publication, signed by the committee’s Chairman, Dr. Uche Uzochukwu, and Secretary, Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor, dated May 12, 2026, revealed that the screening committee sat on May 10th and 11th, 2026, at the State Party Secretariat in Asaba.

Key Highlights:

  • Academic Staff Union of Universities threatened an indefinite strike.
  • Lecturers say the new salary structure is yet to be implemented.
  • ASUU accused the state government of neglecting staff welfare.
  • The union linked poor conditions to four lecturers’ deaths.
  • ASUU demanded payment of arrears and improved welfare.

Of the 82 aspirants who purchased expression and nomination forms for the primary election, 46 were cleared, while 36 were disqualified following meticulous scrutiny.

While, the reasons for disqualification, are still unknown, but some common grounds for disqualification, may included failure to confirm payment of membership dues by nominators, irregular party membership numbers of nominators, inconsistencies in names on submitted documents, insufficient nominators falling short of the required three nominators per ward, non-adherence to existing zoning arrangements in constituencies, failure to resign from political offices in accordance with the electoral act, and invalid or multiple affidavits that failed to disclose material particulars relating to certificates.

Notable Disqualifications

Among the high-profile disqualifications were Emeka Nwobi, Ph.D., who was disqualified for the Aniocha North constituency, along with Ekpebide Isaiah Goodluck (Warri South West), Esonanjo Chukwunweike (Aniocha North), and Perez P. Omoun, Esq., who was disqualified for the Patani constituency.

Other disqualified aspirants include Abanjo Lucky (Ika South), Bernard Odio ( Isoko North), Bino Obowomani (Isoko South 1), Agbodo Joshua Ovie (Ethiope West), Akponofuo Pemu Festus (Sapele), Akpodiete Edoja Rufus (Ughelli North II), and Tekedor Penasine Clement (Warri South West).

Cleared Aspirants

Among those cleared are Alapala Anthony E (Burutu I), Arthur Akpowowo (Ethiope East), Ashaka Orobosa (Isoko North), Benjamin E. Sharta (Udu), Benson Obire (Warri South II), Bridget Anyafulu (Oshimili South), and Hon. Mofe Edema (Warri South I), Pally Eghove (Isoko South 1), Lucky Idhoveh ( Isoko South 1) among others.

Right to Appeal

The committee stressed that it acted strictly in accordance with APC guidelines, the party’s constitution, and the Electoral Act. It further noted that disqualified aspirants who feel aggrieved by the verdict have the right to challenge their disqualification at the screening appeal committee stage.

“All disqualified aspirants based on short-comings enumerated above, is at liberty to challenge the verdict/result at the screening appeal committee stage,” the committee stated.

The release of the list has sent shockwaves across various constituencies in Delta State, with many supporters of disqualified aspirants expressing outrage, while political analysts say the high number of disqualifications signals a determined effort by the party to enforce internal discipline ahead of the general elections.
