Tottenham Hotspur suffered a major setback in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Spurs appeared on course for a vital victory when Xavi Simons curled home in the 77th minute to restore their lead, lifting hopes of ending a prolonged winless run.

However, deep into stoppage time, Georginio Rutter struck in the 95th minute to snatch a point for Brighton and silence the home crowd.

The hosts had earlier taken the lead through Pedro Porro, who headed in from Simons’ delivery in the 39th minute. But Brighton responded just before halftime, with Kaoru Mitoma producing a stunning volley in added time to level the score.

Despite showing resilience and flashes of improvement, Spurs were unable to hold on, extending their winless run and leaving them still in the relegation zone with only five games remaining.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi will take some encouragement from the performance, but time is running out for his side to secure survival.

For Brighton, the late equaliser continues their strong push for European qualification under Fabian Hurzeler. The Seagulls have now picked up valuable points in recent weeks, keeping them firmly in contention for a top-six finish.

Tottenham face a crucial trip to Wolves next, while Brighton prepare for a key clash against fellow European hopefuls Chelsea as the season approaches its decisive stages.
