The army on Wednesday buried Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other soldiers killed during a deadly insurgent attack in Borno State.

The fallen officers and troops were laid to rest at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, the state capital, amid full military honours.

The soldiers were reportedly killed on April 9, when suspected fighters of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched coordinated assaults on military positions in Benisheikh, a strategic town in Kaga Local Government Area, along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the army described the burial ceremony as solemn and emotionally charged, reflecting the gravity of the loss.

“In a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony, the nation on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, laid to rest late Brigadier General Omo Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement read.

It added that the ceremony, held in Maiduguri, was marked by deep sorrow, honour, and reflection as the military paid its last respects to the deceased personnel.

According to the army, the fallen soldiers were accorded full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice to the nation.

“Their sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid daily by members of the armed forces to safeguard the peace, unity, and security of Nigeria,” the statement added.

Among those present at the burial were Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; and other top-ranking military officers.

They described the deceased as patriots who paid the ultimate price in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Prayers were offered for the repose of their souls, while detailed citations of their service records were read in honour of their contributions.

The army further noted that the grief of the bereaved families highlighted the human cost of Nigeria’s prolonged counterinsurgency operations in the North-East, even as it reaffirmed the military’s commitment to tackling insurgency in the region.
