Harry Maguire will miss Manchester United’s crucial Premier League trip to Chelsea after being handed an additional one-match suspension by the Football Association.
The 33-year-old defender was initially sent off during United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last month after conceding a penalty in the 78th minute for a foul on Evanilson.
However, further disciplinary action followed after the FA charged him with improper conduct over remarks made to fourth official Matt Donohue as he left the pitch.
According to the FA, Maguire used abusive or insulting language, resulting in an additional one-match ban and a £30,000 fine.
Match official Donohue reported that the defender shouted, “You’re a joke. You’re all a joke” while exiting the field.
Maguire denied directing the comments at the officials but admitted his reaction was inappropriate and issued an apology.
The regulatory commission considered imposing a two-match extension but settled on a single additional game after taking mitigating factors into account.
Maguire’s absence compounds a growing defensive crisis for United ahead of the Stamford Bridge encounter.
Centre-back Lisandro Martinez is also suspended after being sent off for violent conduct in the recent defeat to Leeds United.
Head coach Michael Carrick has criticised the decision and hinted the club could appeal the red card.
Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the match due to a long-term back injury.
The situation leaves United with limited options in central defence, potentially relying on young players like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, or reshuffling experienced players into unfamiliar roles.

United currently sit third in the Premier League, level on points with Aston Villa and narrowly ahead of Liverpool with six matches remaining.
A defeat to Chelsea could significantly dent their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League spot, with the London side aiming to close the gap to four points.
The high-stakes encounter now presents a major tactical test for Carrick, as United look to navigate defensive setbacks and maintain their push for a top-four finish.
