AFCON 2025 Crisis: Senegal rejects CAF ruling, plans Trophy parade amid title dispute with Morocco

A fresh controversy has erupted in African football as Senegal national football team insists it remains the rightful winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, despite being officially stripped of the title by Confederation of African Football.

In a move that signals open resistance, the Senegalese Football Federation has announced plans to parade the disputed trophy ahead of an international friendly against Peru national football team in Paris.

The dispute follows a tense final in which Senegal initially defeated Morocco national football team 1-0. However, CAF later overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, citing a breach of competition rules after Senegal reportedly walked off the pitch before the match was formally concluded.

Senegal’s football authorities have rejected the ruling, describing it as unjust and without precedent. Federation president Abdoulaye Fall maintained that the country would continue to contest the decision, framing the issue as both a legal and moral battle.

The matter has now been escalated to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is expected to deliver a final and binding verdict. Senegal’s legal representatives argue that overturning a completed match result through administrative action could set a troubling precedent in global football governance.

CAF, however, has defended its position, insisting that its disciplinary and appeals processes were properly applied. The body maintains that its decision was based on established regulations regarding match abandonment and conduct.

As tensions persist, the AFCON 2025 title remains unresolved. Senegal’s planned trophy parade highlights its refusal to recognise the CAF verdict, ensuring that the dispute continues to dominate headlines as the football world awaits a definitive ruling.
