Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has boasted that the state has effectively become a political stronghold for the ruling party, stating that opposition parties now have little ground to operate because of the visible infrastructure projects delivered by his administration.
The governor made the statement on Friday while inaugurating the 4.8-kilometre Oko–Amakom, Oko-Obiokpu and Oko-Anala Road in Oko Kingdom, alongside other road networks in Asaba within Oshimili South Local Government Area.
Speaking during the ceremony, Oborevwori said the scale of development recorded across the state had strengthened public confidence in government and positioned the administration strongly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, his electoral performance in the 2023 polls already demonstrated widespread support across the state.
“When I contested the 2023 election, I won in 21 out of the 25 local government areas even before becoming governor. With the level of development and projects delivered in almost three years, Delta State has become a no-go area for other political parties,” he said.
The governor explained that the newly inaugurated road would significantly improve access for farmers in Oko and surrounding communities, allowing them to transport produce to markets more easily and increase their income.
He recalled that the terrain around Oko was previously difficult, particularly during the rainy season, when farmers struggled to move their goods because of poor road conditions.
Oborevwori noted that many farmers had been forced to travel through neighbouring Anambra State to sell their produce, often at low prices because of the transportation challenges.
“Today, we have completed this road and farmers can now transport their produce easily to markets, which will increase their earnings and improve their living conditions,” the governor said.
He further announced that the state government had approved Phase Two of the Oko road project at a cost of ₦16.9 billion. The project has been awarded to Setraco Nigeria Limited with a completion timeline of 24 months, although the governor expressed optimism that the contractor could finish earlier.
Oborevwori also highlighted the completion of the Amaechi Agusi Road and adjoining streets in Asaba, explaining that the area previously suffered severe flooding and erosion that made the roads almost impassable.
According to him, the newly constructed road network and drainage system will now improve transportation, support business activities and reduce flooding in the area.

The governor described the current phase of development across the state as a “harvest of projects,” noting that several major infrastructure and education projects had already been completed.
Among the projects listed were facilities at the Government Technical College in Omadino and new faculty buildings at the University of Delta and the Southern Delta University.
Oborevwori said his administration remained focused on performance rather than rhetoric.
“As I always say, we are working. When you come to Delta State, you will see the evidence of what we are doing. Governance is about performance and the people can see our report card clearly,” he said.
The governor also announced that additional empowerment programmes for youths and women would soon be rolled out under his administration’s MORE Agenda, stressing that peace and stability remain essential for sustained development.
He also commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the economic reforms introduced in 2023, noting that the policies had improved the financial capacity of states to implement development projects.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, explained that the Oko road was constructed above the flood level recorded during the devastating 2012 Nigeria floods to prevent future disruptions.
He added that residents had already expressed appreciation for the project and pledged continued support for the administration.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Patrick Ukah, disclosed that more than 70 kilometres of roads had either been completed or were ongoing within the capital territory.
According to him, about 50 kilometres were executed directly by the agency, while over 20 kilometres of drainage projects were also undertaken to address flooding challenges.
Ukah further revealed that the long-awaited Asagba Road project in Asaba had received approval from the governor and construction would commence soon.
Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Council, Kelvin Ezenyili, praised the governor for sustained investment in infrastructure, describing the newly inaugurated roads as transformative projects that would boost economic growth and improve livelihoods.
Traditional leaders from the host communities also expressed appreciation. The Palace Secretary to the Asagba of Asaba, Patrick Ndili, and the Akor of Oko Kingdom, Osita I, said the project represented a long-awaited intervention that would open the community to greater development.
They assured the governor of the continued support of the people of Oshimili South as the state moves toward the 2027 elections.
