Pupils in Anambra State who fail to attend classes on Mondays risk a one-week suspension, the Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has warned.

The caution forms part of the state government’s renewed push to enforce strict school attendance across the state following directives by Governor Chukwuma Soludo that academic activities must hold normally throughout the week.

Education authorities said the measure is aimed at curbing the growing trend of pupils staying away from school at the start of the week, a development the government believes undermines learning and discipline in both public and private institutions across the state.

Chuma-Udeh explained that the meeting was convened following directives from Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who has insisted that academic activities must take place normally across the state. According to her, the schools were asked to clarify why some pupils were still missing classes on Mondays despite the government’s order.

She stressed that the government would no longer tolerate any violation of the directive and warned that disciplinary measures would be enforced against defaulters.

The commissioner added that any pupil absent from school on Mondays could be suspended for one week as part of the government’s efforts to enforce compliance.

During the meeting, officials of Mount Olive Schools informed the ministry that Monday attendance had improved in recent weeks. However, representatives of Spring Field Academy noted that some parents were still hesitant to send their children to school at the beginning of the week.

Both institutions assured the ministry that they would take further steps to ensure pupils attend school regularly on Mondays in line with the government’s directive.

In a related development, the Ministry of Education has successfully conducted the 2026 Transition Placement Examination for pupils across the state.

Chuma-Udeh, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ifeoma Agbaizu, supervised the examination at several centres in Awka.

The centres visited included UNIZIK Demonstration School, Igwebeze Primary School in Ifite, Awka, and Igwebike Grammar School.

Education officials reported that the examination was conducted smoothly across the centres, with no major issues recorded.
