Gunmen invade Anambra schools, send students home in honour of Biafra Day

Gunmen invaded schools in Onitsha and some parts of Idemili area of Anambra State on Tuesday, chasing students out of the classrooms.

Claiming to be enforcing “Biafra Day,” they were said to have also invaded markets and public places to chase people away. The gunmen claimed every May 30 is set aside yearly to celebrate Biafra day.

However, this year’s edition fell on the same day as the Monday sit-at-home order which was observed on May 30. The gunmen insisted that Tuesday must be observed separately because the normal Monday sit-at-home day was different from Biafra day.

There were fears among the residents of the state whether to go out or not. Some of the people who stepped out had to return to their various houses due to the chaos caused by the gunmen. Meanwhile, the Anambra State police command was yet to verify the incident or issue a statement.
