A 24-year-old man, identified as Yemi Otobugu, has been killed in what police suspect was a cult-related attack in the Iyara community of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Key Highlights:

  • 24-year-old Yemi Otobugu was shot dead in Iyara, Warri South.
  • Gunmen reportedly attacked him at his residence on Cemetery Road.
  • Police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation.
  • The killing is suspected to be cult-related.
  • Residents are calling for stronger security amid rising violence.

The incident reportedly occurred along Cemetery Road, where unidentified gunmen allegedly invaded the victim’s residence and opened fire before fleeing the area.

Residents who witnessed the aftermath said the shooting caused widespread panic and has been linked to renewed tensions among rival cult groups operating in the community. Otobugu was pronounced dead, and his body has since been taken to a mortuary.

Confirming the incident, Delta State Police Command spokesperson Bright Edafe said investigations are underway.

“Yes, the incident happened. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.

The killing is the latest in a series of violent incidents believed to be associated with cult activities in parts of Warri South. In May, another resident, Sunday Okoro, was fatally shot along Urhobo Road in an attack that local sources also linked to suspected cult rivalry.

Community members alleged that the earlier incident may have been connected to an ongoing feud involving the Vikings Confraternity and the Eiye Confraternity, although authorities have not publicly confirmed those claims.

According to eyewitness accounts from the May incident, Okoro was approached by individuals he appeared to know before he was shot at close range. Those accounts have not been independently verified by law enforcement.

The recent attacks have heightened security concerns among residents of Warri South, with many calling for stronger measures to curb recurring violence linked to suspected cult activities despite ongoing police operations in the area.
