Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has initiated the distribution of relief materials to victims of the recent flood
disaster in Maiduguri.
The flood, as noticed by The Trumpet, was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, the situation which led to the displacement of nearly two million residents, forcing them to seek refuge in 36 camps across the city.
The flag-off ceremony for the relief distribution, was observed to have took place on Monday at the Bakasi camp, located along Damboa Road in Maiduguri.
Essential supplies, received by the victims, includes ,a 25kg bag of rice, a carton of pasta, and N10,000 in cash.
Addressing journalists at the event, Zulum expressed concern over the influx of people not directly affected by the flood into the camps, which he said , is complicating relief efforts.
“We observed that it is no longer sustainable to continue receiving people in the camps because many people that were not affected are tripping to the camps,” he said.

He also announced plans for a comprehensive assessment of the affected areas to better inform future interventions.
“We have also concluded arrangements that we shall do the assessment at the communities to verify the actual number of those that were affected,” he stated.
The governor acknowledged the receipt of significant donations from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, NEMA, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to support ongoing relief efforts.
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, who spoke at the event, detailed her agency’s efforts in providing shelter and clean drinking water through mobile water purifiers for the flood victims.
