The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the newly completed China-aided headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, as a powerful symbol of regional solidarity, international cooperation, and a shared vision for West Africa’s future.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media to the FCT Minister of State, Austine Elemue.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said the project goes beyond the commissioning of a physical structure, noting that it represents a broader vision of partnership and unity among West African nations.

“It represents the handover of a vision of partnership, unity, and the collective resolve of West Africa to build enduring institutions that will shape its future,” he said.

The minister, who was represented by the FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, commended the People’s Republic of China for its contribution to the project, describing it as a significant boost to regional integration and a testament to effective international cooperation.

“This magnificent edifice is not just about concrete, steel, and glass. It is a bold statement that cooperation still matters and that diplomacy can deliver tangible and meaningful outcomes,” he added.

Wike also highlighted the strategic importance of Abuja, as Nigeria’s diplomatic hub, noting that hosting the ECOWAS headquarters further strengthens the city’s role as a centre for dialogue, cooperation, and continental progress.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT Administration to supporting initiatives that promote regional development, stating that the administration played a key role in facilitating the project through approvals, coordination, security arrangements, and infrastructure support.

According to him, ECOWAS remains one of the strongest expressions of West Africa’s shared identity and aspirations.

“Great institutions deserve worthy homes,” he said, while calling for sustained unity and collaboration among member states.

The minister urged leaders and stakeholders across the region to remain committed to building strong institutions and deepening regional integration.
