Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has arrived in New York to lead the country’s delegation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which runs from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Shettima will represent President Bola Tinubu at the global gathering, where world leaders are marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The commemorative session will take place on Monday, September 22, at the UN headquarters, followed by the high-level General Debates scheduled from Tuesday, September 23, to Sunday, September 28.
In one of the highlights of the week, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, during the afternoon session between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. New York time. His address is expected to touch on pressing issues affecting Africa and the global community, from peace and security to economic stability.

Shettima is also billed to participate in a special Climate Summit for Heads of State and Government on Wednesday, September 24, hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. At the event, Nigeria is set to unveil its renewed Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, signaling the country’s commitment to climate action.
In addition, the Vice President will join other world leaders at a high-level roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing, convened by the President of Kenya. He will also hold bilateral meetings with key global partners on the sidelines of the Assembly.
Following his engagements in New York, Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, where he is expected to meet with top officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
