The management of University of Cross River State has announced plans to hold a solemn assembly in honour of three students and a staff member who lost their lives in a tragic motor accident along the Calabar–Itu Federal Highway.

The assembly, scheduled for May 8, 2026, will feature prayers for the repose of the deceased and for healing and unity within the university community.

The event replaces an earlier plan by students to organise a candlelight procession in memory of their departed colleagues.

In a notice issued on May 7, 2026, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Victor Ndifon, announced the cancellation of the procession and urged students to adopt a more orderly and reflective approach to mourning.

According to the university authorities, the decision was taken to preserve peace and prevent any situation that could lead to disorder within the institution.

The management acknowledged the grief and emotional trauma being experienced by students following the incident, while also noting that some injured students are still receiving medical treatment.

“As the university community continues to mourn, it is important that we avoid any situation capable of causing disorder or disrupting peace,” the notice stated.

The institution further appealed to students to cooperate with the directive and support efforts aimed at ensuring the period of mourning is observed with dignity, calm, and unity.

The fatal accident along the Calabar–Itu Highway has continued to draw sympathy from members of the university community and residents of Calabar.
