The Tinubu administration has approved an increase in the registration fee for the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO), raising the cost to ₦50,000 from the current fee ahead of the 2027 examination cycle.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the new registration fee will take effect from 2027 following a request by WAEC and consultations with examination bodies on the rising cost of conducting the examinations.
The ministry said the approved fee represents a significant increase over the current registration cost and is intended to address operational realities facing the examination bodies.

As part of the approval, the federal government also directed WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform registration fee for their Senior School Certificate Examinations to ensure consistency across both examination bodies.
The Ministry of Education stated that schools, parents, candidates and other stakeholders would be formally notified before the new fee takes effect, allowing adequate time for preparation ahead of the 2027 registration process.
The revised fee will apply to candidates registering for both WAEC and NECO Senior School Certificate Examinations from the 2027 academic session.
