Taxi driver, wife and children die in auto crash in Ondo

A yet-to-be-identified taxi driver, wife and three children have died in an auto crash in the Oluwatuyi area of Ijoka in Akure, the Ondo State Capital. The Trumpet gathered that the driver rammed into a heavy duty tractor used for road construction, parked by the roadside.

It was reported that the taxi driver was driving home from Shoprite along Ijo-Mimo at late hour on Tuesday with his wife and three children before they met their untimely death.

According to an eyewitness, the man was at high speed and rammed into the parked heavy truck by the culvert. A fellow taxi driver who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that there was no way the deceased would not have seen such a huge truck parked by the side of the road.

He noted that the driver must have been under the influence of alcohol and was on high speed which aggravated the impact of the accident. He said: “Even when we came to check on him, we found out that his corpse was smelling of alcohol. I think his wife should have made efforts to control him,” he added.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Fumilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and the number of casualties. As at press time, the identities of the victims were yet unknown and their remains have been deposited at the morgue of the University Medical Teaching Hospital, UNIMEDTH, Akure.
