Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, has said that the insecurity in the South-East especially the unabated Sit-at-home is now being used to taunt governors and leaders from the zone.
Ohanaeze’s reaction was coming on the heels of the Senate President’s comment. Godswill Akpabio during plenary when a motion was moved by Senator Osita Izunaso(lmo West) to interfere with the situation in the South-East.
In a statement signed on Saturday by Ohanaeze’s Secretary-general, Mazi Okechukwu lsiguzoro, described Akpabio’s remarks as a taunt to south-East governors to be proactive and revealed the reason why the federal government was silent on Nnamdi’s release.
According to the lsiguzoro, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo grumbled over Senator Godswill Akpabio’s remarks and comments during the Senate session, where Senator Osita Izunaso moved a motion for the Senate to interfere with the situation in the Southeast and the Senate President’s response can be seen as a slap in the faces of the Southeast Governors and a wake-up call for them for several reasons.
The body blamed the Southeast Governors for their negligence to end the civil disobedience order in the region, adding that Akpabio was essentially shifting the responsibility to them instead of acknowledging the root causes of the unrest.
“It is important to recognize that civil disobedience arises from deep-seated grievances and dissatisfaction within a people. Instead of addressing these underlying issues, Akpabio chooses to taunt the governors, reminding them of their authority and dismissing their efforts as defective to fix the situation.
“Akpabio’s comment that the failures of the Southeast Governors have accorded Simon Ekpa the status of the real governor of the Southeast is not only unmannered but also undermines the legitimacy and authority of the elected governors.
” South-East governors have lost control and for an individual from Finland holds more power and influence over the region. This not only diminishes the efforts of the governors to restore peace but also undermines the democratic process and the principles of governance.

“Akpabio’s remarks can be interpreted as a wake-up call to the Southeast Governors. By highlighting the perceived failures of the governors and pointing out the influence of an individual agitator, he may be urging them to take a more proactive and effective approach in addressing the concerns and grievances of the people in the region.”
It stated that the South-East governors have huge responsibilities to govern and protect the interests of their constituents, while finding political solutions to the ongoing issues rather than relying on the Federal Government to end the Sit at Home order.
Isiguzoro further highlighted that Akpabio’s statement regarding the Southeast Governors provides insight into the mindset of the APC-led Federal Government and its nonchalant approach to the issues in the region.
“The rejection of political solutions by the Nigerian Senate, particularly in the face of Southeast Senators, has reinforced our suspicions that the Federal Government’s silence on the insecurity challenges in the Southeast is deliberate. This silence can be interpreted as a message to Ndigbo, implying that they should find their own homemade solutions to the problem.”
Ohanaeze said that the situation has further justified its position that President Bola Tinubu should declare a state of emergency across the Southeast zone where there is a collapse of law and order.
