Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti’s reported decision to walk out of Peller and Jarvis’ wedding reception after an alleged Wizkid-Fela remark by the event’s master of ceremony has sparked a heated debate among Nigerians online.

A video circulating on social media showed Seun leaving the wedding venue, while saying, “we are in the wrong place.”

The incident divided netizens, with some praising the singer for allegedly standing up for the legacy of his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, while others accused him of taking the reported comment too seriously.

Defending Seun, X user @advocate_rotimi argued that the singer was right to leave if he believed his father’s legacy had been disrespected.

“Only a foolish son remains seated while his father’s name is reduced to a punchline. A wise son knows when to withdraw from a gathering that has lost reverence. Greatness deserves reverence, even where opinions differ,” he said.

Similarly, @AgronomistSeyi criticised the alleged remark and backed Seun’s decision to walk out. “You no fit vex for every MC, especially if you don know say the MC get antecedence of stupidity,” he stated.

“Na to just walk out immediately, Cos wetin concern the wedding party with Wizkid and Fela. Once they have nothing meaningful to say, they start saying nonsense.”

However, some netizens questioned the narrative surrounding the incident and urged others to verify what actually happened before taking sides.

X user @_Ston667 criticised social media users for accepting the circulating caption without checking the facts. He said: “Wow reading d comments and I see that a lot of y’all believe d caption makes me wonder if Nigerian youths have sense of their own or they all contribute d sense to page handler, fav celebrity, fav politician, anything una just see on post una no dey even check well nah once believing.”

The user later alleged that some Wizkid fans were spreading what they described as a false narrative.

“Wow wizkid fans yall are trending this lie oo no be small thing nah wah oo, am nobody’s fan oo rather a fan of myself but d way una dey caption lie and post it’s amazing.”

Another critic, @oyinboyy, questioned Seun’s reaction and suggested that Wizkid’s previous references to Fela were not necessarily serious.

“He still doesn’t know Wiz was never really serious with the whole fela thing. Grown up acting this childish tueh.”

Meanwhile, @greatmoney7 said the alleged incident reflected a broader problem with event MCs using celebrities as subjects of jokes.

“I’m not a fan of kuti, but why do Nigerian MCs always like to throw subtle jokes when anchoring events like this? This is not a comedy show, why do they always try to make it about someone else.”

The reactions have continued to fuel debate over whether Seun Kuti was justified in walking out or whether he overreacted to the alleged comment, with the controversy once again placing Fela Kuti’s enduring legacy and Wizkid’s influence in contemporary Afrobeats at the centre of online discussion.
